It was Roo's bedtime, but he didn't want to go to bed.
He kept jumping about. "I'm not tired!" he cried. "I
don't want to put on my pyjamas!"
After a lot of effort, Kanga managed to tuck Roo up in his bed.
"I won't sleep," he said, sulkily.
"Before you say that," said Kanga. "I've a bedtime story
to tell you about another little kangaroo that didn't want to sleep."
"I still won't sleep," said Roo, but Kanga continued.
"Once upon a time,' said Kanga, "there was a small kangaroo
called Noo."
"That sounds like me!" said Roo. Now he was interested.
"So it does!" said Kanga, smiling.
"One night, Noo decided to stay awake and see what he could see
in the woods.
Out in the dark, he watched from behind a tree. At first nothing much
happened. A few badgers and a fox sniffed around, looking for food.
An owl went 't'wit t'woo'.
("T'wit t'woo!" went Roo.)
"Noo kept watching," said Kanga. "He still wasn't tired.
Then, as the clouds parted to reveal the silvery moon, the woodland
animals stopped feeding.
They looked a little frightened, but strangely
they all lay down on the ground and pretended to sleep. |
Noo wondered why, but he stayed wide awake.
Then...
Twigs cracked nearby as something large approached.
It grunted loudly. A bush shook as it passed. Noo froze.
From out of the darkness, two yellow eyes shone as they looked about
for movement.
Then a long snout appeared, smoke poured from its nostrils.
It was the sleepy monster!"
(Roo jumped!)
Kanga smiled and carried on, "Black fur covered its body. On each
paw, two long claws left trails on the ground.
All the animals in the wood knew that if it caught them awake, it would
send them into a deep sleep that they would never wake up from.
The sleepy monster ignored the animals that lay on the ground with their
eyes closed.
Its beady yellow eyes looked straight at Noo.
But Noo was too scared to run. He didn't know he should be asleep!
Too late!
The smoke from the monster's nostrils began to make Noo sleepy, very
sleepy...."
"Oh no!" gulped Roo. "I don't want to meet the sleepy
monster!"
He shut his eyes tight and pretended to sleep until he didn't need to
pretend anymore.
"Goodnight, dear,' said Kanga kissing her little one on the cheek.
The End.
